Experiments: Epoxy Resin
have never worked with epoxy resin before, and felt utterly intimidated
blueberry jam
i used black accent beads, they're reaaaaaaaaaaaally tiny. less than 1mm. but rather uneven, so i dumped them into the remainder resin from making the orange jelly (?) with a bit of cobalt, bit of red, and a touch of purple.
it's hard to take a good angle of them, i'm not sure which looks more convincing as blueberry jam atop cakes, the ones with more or less 'blueberries'?
jellied oranges were actually failed caning experiments. didn't look like orange slices (IMO) so i quartered them and am hoping to make lovely stick cakes out of these. we'll see!
i actually made an earlier batch (this being the 2nd attempt) with 15 drops of each resin component, but that failed miserably. plus i was too impatient so i kept touching it (and getting sticky gunk onto myself), so fingerprints were left all over, it got slanted and wouldn't level properly, stuck to the aluminum foil ARGH i chucked it out.
lessons learnt:
- the needle that you get from pharmacies is too narrow to suck up the goopy resin
- forgot where i got the straws that fit perfectly onto the nozzles :(
- oil paints in minute amounts (tip of toothpick will do) give a wonderful transparent hue
- sticks to aluminum foil :(
- does not stick to cling wrap (yay!) but i used a dollar store knockoff, so it might or might not work better with the branded stuff?
- does not stick to bakery takeout plastic container bottoms, but is quite a bitch to remove :(
notes to self:
- have to experiment with using a mold release agent. will try baby oil :X
EDIT: Does not work, resulting resin does not cure hard, remains limp. I guess I could use this result for other projects.
- baking it
EDIT: no change. not sure about colour, since i only used the 'blueberry' one.
i have left them to cure for about 10 hours so far, it's slightly flexible but not sticky. i've read popping them into the oven will cure it faster, however i'm not sure how this epoxy would react since i have no working instructions to read. the bottles are medicine bottles labelled A & B :P

my favourite food item so far, and it came about because i made mistakes :P
screwed up the orange cane (what's new, i really suck at caning :() so i had to figure out what to do with the clay. i had baked the cane for 5 mins so that it wouldn't smear when i sliced, and my slicing was uneven and the stupid clay argh whatever, it was just a disaster.
so i chopped it up and turned it into orange cream filling. :)
oh, and in between the frustrations, i made a little version of baobei ^ ^
Bunbun wants in too!

couldn't possibly call her beta, could i?

oh. i just realized i only have 5MB remaining for my flickr uploads. wondering if i should upgrade to flickr pro. hrm. we'll see i suppose.
i also got some equal part resin from mdm ang, i'm so excited! i can finally make liquid foods :)
here are my fave plates from today's haul. they're from hongkong, and totally worth the buy i feel. love love love the details! i plan to make mini sushi and display them on these. ^ ^
no, she's not paying me to advertise, but she's such a wonderful lady, i feel the need to give her as much help as i can. and also hope that she stays in business for me to get more wonderful miniature stuff from her!
UPDATE: http://snowfern-clover.blogspot.com/2011/09/introducing-madam-ang.html
i dragged L down to mdm ang's miniature workshop at sunshine plaza before my appt, that place is...*swoon* i could barely contain my joy! mdm ang is such a warm and generous lady, she chatted and shared loads of tips and tricks and ideas! even gave me a round-down discount on the items L purchased for me ^ ^
the stamp is from a scrapbook shop in plaza sing, i'm not sure what i'm going to do with it and polymer clay yet, but my brain is teeming with ideas! i'm sure i'll come up with something :)
the 'handmade paper' is from daiso, L spotted the last pack and i couldn't say no, could i? ;)
woo~!
in other news, docs think the lump looks benign, so they're not fiddling with it anymore, at least not for 2 more months. the EBV panel came out half positive and half negative, the good news is the more suspicious one for cancer returned negative. so i guess i needn't worry too much, at least not for 2 more months > <
to hell with the atypical-cells-unable-to-confirm-malignancy biopsy result eh? :S
i'm going to return to my half-a-happy-pill dosage from today onward, i don't think i need the added boost now that the blood test result seems...optimistic. poor L. i will make an added effort to keep my mood up. or at least, not be as snappy as i used to. :S

my wrist hurts :(
fiddling around with polymer clay, accent beads and aluminum pie tins (to make cookie cutters!)
taken with the new sony Cyber-shot DSC-S950 that L bought for me ^ ^
first attempt
yuk. the colour looks okay in this blurry pic, but it looks really terrible IRL, so i'm probably going to recycle the clay. :(
p.s. i'm talking about the cookies, the stitch is from re-ment :P
